Wikipedia, March 6, 2020 (Oreste Baratieri; born Oreste Baratter; born in Condino (County of Tyrol, now Trentino), 13 November 1841; began his career as a volunteer for Garibaldi's Redshirts, serving in the Sicilian-Neapolitan campaign 1860-1861; jointed the regular Italian Army; fought at the Battle of Custoza in 1866; rose to the rank of general by 1891, appointed commander of Italian forces in colonial Africa; became governor of Eritrea the following her; fought with Ethiopian forces along the border 1893-1895, winning several battles over the Mahdists, particularly at the Battle of Kassala, 17 July 1894; in February 1896, the government of Francesco Crispi ordered Baratieri to engage the Ethiopians; on 29 February Baratieri marched on the Ethiopians at Adowa; each side lost close to 7,000 but that was 2/3 of the Italian-Eritrean force; Italy was forced to sign the Treaty of Addis Ababa guaranteeing Ethiopian sovereignty, and Baratieri was court-martialed at Asmara, acquitted but forced to resign his post the next year; spent his retirement in the Austrian Tyrol; died 7 August 1901, Sterzing [Vipiteno])
