Dictionary of African Biography , accessed December 29, 2014, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: ( Clapperton, Hugh; explorer, traveler; born 1788 in Annan, Scotland; a in the 1820s through his participation in two expeditions; went to sea at the age of thirteen, initially into the merchant marine and then into the Royal Navy; served as a petty officer in the Napoleonic wars; accompanied Dr. Walter Oudney, who had been appointed to lead an expedition of scientific discovery into the interior of Africa (later known as the Bornu Mission; collected extensive information on the geography of the Sokoto caliphate, including maps of southerly caravan routes; in June 1825 the mission was hailed as a great success and persuaded the British government to approve a follow-up mission, under his command, to develop official relations with Sokoto and Bornu; his records are valued as exceptional insights into early nineteenth-century West Africa; died 1827 Near Sokoto, Nigeria)
