Read law in Illinois, and was a practicing attorney in Metamora, Ill. Elected to the US. House of Representatives as a Democrat March 4, 1875 to March 3, 1877 and March 4, 1879 to March 3, 1881. Elected vice president of the United States in 1892, serving from 1893 to 1897. Died in Chicago, Ill. June 14, 1914.)
