Cossack statesman and hetman-in-exile. In 1706 was appointed general chancellor by Mazepa. On 04-16-1710 elected hetman in Bendery with backing of Charles XII of Sweden. Orlyk was chief author of Constitution of Bendery. Concluded treaties with the Crimean khan, Tatars, Bashkirs, and Turks. He campaigned against the Russians from 1711-1714. Emigrated to Sweden in 1714, and from 1722 to his death in 1742 he was interned in Turkish-controlled territories. After defeat of his forces by Russian Army in 1714 Orlik fled to Poland and then to Turkish-controlled areas where he was exiled and then killed in 1742. During his period of exile Orlik wrote many letters pleading his case, as well as some poetry.
