Biography/History noteEugene Butler worked at the Progressive Farmer Company for his entire life. Eugene received his bachelors from Mississippi State University in 1913, his second bachelors from Cornell University in 1915, and a Masters in agronomy from Iowa State University in 1917. He started as an assistant editor of the Progressive Farmer, an agriculture publication, between 1917 and 1922. His father, Dr. Tait Butler, started the publication as the Southern Farm Gazette in 1895. Eugene worked his way through the company and became its president in from 1964 to 1968. He continued to serve as chairman of the board and editor-in-chief until 1983, when the company was bought by Time Inc. He retired in 1985, but continued to write the history of the company until his 100th birthday.
