Encyc. of Ukraine: v. 3, p. 475-6 (Mukachiv or Mukacheve; city and raion center in the Transcarpathia oblast. This site has been settled since ancient times. In the 10th cent. Mukachiv belonged to Kievan Rus, and in the 11th cent. it became part of Hungary. Due to its strategic location between Hungary and Galicia Mukacheve has been contested in its history by Cumans and Tatars in the Middle Ages as well as by the Hapsburg and Transylvania dynasties in the 16th-17th cent. By the end of the 17th cent. it was annexed by Austria in whose dominion it remained until after World War I, when it was ceded to Czechslovakia. In 1938 Mukacheve came under Hungarian rule until the Soviet-Czechoslovak treaty of June 1945 which transferred Transcarpathia to the Soviet Ukraine)
