Wikipedia, April 30, 2019 (Martha Hughes Cannon; Martha Maria "Mattie" Hughes Cannon; born July 1, 1857 in Llandudno, Gwynedd, Wales; died July 10, 1932 in Los Angeles, California; member of the Utah Senate from the 6th district, January 11, 1897-January 13, 1901; born Martha Maria Hughes; her family converted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; left Liverpool, England on March 30, 1860 on the ship Underwriter; arrived in Salt Lake City on September 17, 1861; her father, Peter Hughes, died in 1861 in Salt Lake City and Martha's mother married James P. Paul; Martha used both the Paul and Hughes surnames; lived in Salt Lake City; taught school, typesetter for the Deseret News and the Woman's Exponent; graduated with a degree in chemistry from the University of Deseret in 1878 and with a medical degree from the University of Michigan in 1880; practiced medicine in Algonac, Michigan; moved to Philadelphia to take post-graduate coursed at the University of Pennsylvania; enrolled and graduated from the National School of Elocution and Oratory; returned to Salt Lake City and opened a private medical practice; was a resident physician for the Deseret Hospital in 1882; she married Angus Munn Cannon in 1884; first woman elected as a state senator in the United States on November 3, 1896 (she ran against her husband and won); member of the Utah Board of Health; Board of the Utah State School for the Deaf and Dumb; moved to California in 1904 and settled in Los Angeles; died in Los Angeles on July 10, 1932; burial in Salt Lake City Cemetery)
