Studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1917. Was the editor in chief of the "Kentucky Law Journal" 1917-1918 when he graduated from the University of Kentucky college of law. Practiced law in Irvine, Ky. then moved to Paris and practiced law in Lexington, Ky. Served two successive terms as the Democratic representative from Kentucky in the U.S. House of Representatives 1925-1929 then eight successive terms 1931-1949. Served in the U.S. Senate beginning in January 3, 1949 until his death on March 8, 1951 in Washington D.C.)
