(hdg.: Lindsay, William, 1835-1909; Confederate officer, judge, and Kentucky and U.S. senator) Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992: pages 558-559 ("William Lindsay" was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia on September 4, 1835. Attended school in Lexington, Virginia. Moved to Clinton, Ky. to teach school and read law in 1854. Admitted to the bar in 1860 and set up practice in Clinton, Ky. Enlisted as a private in the Confederate Army in May 1861 where he was commissioned as a captain, then assistant quartermaster. Returned to Clinton after being paroled as a prisoner of war on May 16, 1865. Served as a Democrat in the Kentucky Senate in 1867 and from 1889 to 1893. Later a judge and chief justice, Lindsay then moved to Frankfort, Ky. to practice law. When John G. Carlisle resigned from the U. S. Senate, Lindsay was elected to fill the vacancy, serving from February 15, 1893 until March 3, 1901. Moved to live in New York City to practice law until 1907, then returned to Frankfort. Died in Frankfort October 15, 1909.) |
