He attended Settlement Music School, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1950) and later attended South Philadelphia High School. The song on which he built his career, The Twist, was written by Hank Ballard (1959), which he preformed on Dick Clark's American Bandstand (1960); The Twist went to number one in the Billboard music charts (1960). The Twist is the only song in rock music history to be a number one hit twice; this made Chubby Checker and The Twist into a cultural phenomenon. He received a Grammy for Let's Twist Again, (1962))
