He was born 19 January 1919 in Chicago, Illinois, United States; played a historic bass solo on Blues for Israel; joined the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra (1936-1938); performed with Three Sharps and a Flat (1939); one of first African-Americans to work as a studio musician, performing with Raymond Scott's radio orchestra at CBS (1944); recorded four songs cut for the Apollo label (1947); joined the Ahmad Jamal Trio (1951-1962) and the pianist George Shearing's trio (1962). He died 11 August 1962 in Chicago, Illinois, United States)
