Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992: page 600 (James Clark McReynolds, born February 3, 1862 in Elkton, Ky. Graduated as valedictorian from Vanderbilt University in 1882 and received his law degree from the University of Virginia in 1884. Practiced law in Nashville from 1884 to 1903. Was a faculty member at Vanderbilt Law School, then appointed assistant attorney general 1903-1907, then attorney general 1913-1914. A Democrat, he wrote 503 majority opinions and 310 dissents as a Supreme Court Justice from 1914-1941. Retired February 1, 1941, after which he adopted 33 children who were war refugees from Europe. Died in Washington, D.C. on August 24, 1946)
