Polk) Wikipedia 18 July, 2023: (Gideon Johnson Pillow (June 8, 1806 - October 8, 1878) was an American lawyer, politician, speculator, slaveowner, United States Army major general of volunteers during the Mexican-American War and Confederate brigadier general in the American Civil War. Pillow served as a brigadier general in the Tennessee Militia from 1833 to 1836. Pillow joined the Confederacy just after the start of the Civil War. Tennessee Governor Isham G. Harris appointed Pillow as the senior major general in the Tennessee Militia and commander of the Provisional Army of Tennessee as of May 9, 1861.
