Wikipedia, viewed October 2, 2023 (Charles de Sainte-Maure, duc de Montausier; French soldier; born October 6, 1610; became baron de Montausier at the death of his elder brother in 1635; having served under Bernard of Saxe-Weimar in Germany in 1634, he returned to the French service in 1636, and fought in the Rhenish campaigns of the following years; he was taken prisoner on November 25, 1643 after the defeat of the French forces in the Battle of Tuttlingen, remaining for ten months in captivity until payment of his ransom; on his return to France, he became a lieutenant-general; he was named governor of Saintonge and Angoumois after the death of his uncle, the comte de Brassac; during the Fronde, he remained faithful to the Crown in spite of personal grievances against Mazarin; he received from Louis XIV the Order of the Saint Esprit and the government of Normandy; in 1664, the marquisate of Montausier became a duchy; in 1668, he became the governor of the dauphin, a post he kept until 1680; he died on November 17, 1690)
