African American National Biography, accessed December 23, 2014, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Flack, Roberta; popular singer, music educator; born 10 February 1939 probably Asheville, North Carolina, United States; received a BA in Music Education at Howard University (1955); undertook doctoral studies at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst; became the first undergraduate at Howard to give a public recital in vocal literature; taught English at a school for African Americans in Farmville, North Carolina; was hired to perform at Henry Yaffe's Mr. Henry's Club; obtained a contract with Atlantic Records; her second album, Chapter Two, sold over one million copies; her third album, Quiet Fire, totaled one million before its release (1971); Killing Me Softly won a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocals (1973); Roberta earned her a Grammy in the Traditional Pop Vocal category (1994); teamed with folk singer Judy Collins for a series of concerts to benefit the Nina Hyde Center for Breast Cancer Research at Georgetown University)
