African American National Biography, accessed Janary 29, 2015, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Hemsley, Sherman; actor, singer; born 01 February 1938 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. He attended Philadelphia Academy of Dramatic Arts; employed with U.S. Postal Service, New York (1966); and worked with Urban Arts Corps, NY (1967). He played in the CBS sitcom, All in the Family (1973) and also starred in his own sitcom CBS series, The Jeffersons (1975-1985). He won an NAACP Image Award for his portrayal of George Jefferson (1976 and 1982), and won a Golden Globe Award (1983). He starred in Amen on NBC (1991) and earned another NAACP Image Award (1987). He joined the Walt Disney Television/Jim Henson Production, Dinosaurs, on ABC (1994). He died 24 July 2012 in El Paso, Texas, United States)
