African American National Biography, accessed May 13, 2015, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Jones, Booker T.; organist, rhythm and blues musician / singer, composer/ arranger, music producer; born 12 November 1944 in Memphis, Tennessee, United States; session musician for Stax Records, Memphis (1960); formed the instrumental group Booker T. and the MGs (1962); their first and biggest hit was "Green Onions" (1962); received a bachelor's degree in Music Education from Indiana University; majored in trombone (1966); appeared on more than 600 Stax / Volt recordings (1963-1968); Booker T. and the MGs had seven Top Forty hits (in the 1960s); was vice president of Stax (1968-1969); The MGs disbanded (1972); moved to Hollywood (1969); joined A&M records as staff producer; the MGs reunited (1974); produced Willie Nelson's "Stardust", became multi-platinum and remained on the pop charts for two years (1978); the music of Booker T. and the MGs appeared in the Hollywood movies "American Graffiti" (1973) and "Barfly" (1987); reunited with the MGs (1990); they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1992); served as the house band for the four-hour Bob Dylan Tribute concert at Madison Square Garden (1992); recorded an album with Neil Young (2001); the song "Cruisin'" won a Grammy as Best Pop Instrumental Performance (1994))
