African-American social leaders and activists, ©2003: pages 163-164 (Gabriel Prosser, ca.1775-1800, born in Henrico County, Virginia as a slave, known for organizing the largest slave revolt in American history had it not been betrayed by one of the conspirators. Apprenticed as a blacksmith, he contacted slaves and freedmen in Richmond and planned to march in Richmond and take then Governor James Madison hostage August 31, 1800. Prosser was later captured and found guilty of insurrection October 6, 1800 and was hanged on October 10 in Richmond, Virginia.)
