Ukr. rad. ent︠s︡ykl.: v. 4, p. 108 (Z︠H︡danov (until 1948 named Mariupolʹ); a city in Donet︠s︡ʹka oblastʹ URSR. Originally established at the end of the 16th cent. by Zaporozhian Cossacks as a fortress called Kalʹmius [no publs. in LC data base]. In 1778 it was renamed as Pavlovsʹk [no publs. in LC data base]. In 1780 it was again renamed as Mariupolʹ (Marianopolʹ). Soviet power was established there on 01-12-1918)
Rad. ent︠s︡ykl. istoriï Ukraïny: v. 2, p. 138 (Z︠H︡danov (until 1948 named Mariupolʹ), a port city in Donet︠s︡ʹka oblastʹ. It was founded in 1779 on Cossack winter quarters and named after an edict of Kateryna II as Mariupolʹ (Marianopolʹ). In 1784 Mariupolʹ was a port in the Katerynoslavsʹke namisnyt︠s︡tvo. From 1797 it was part of the Novorossiĭsʹka hubernii︠a︡ until 1802 when it became part of the Katerynoslavsʹka hubernii︠a︡. In Jan. 1918 Soviet power was established in Mariupolʹ. From April 1920 to Nov. 1918 the city was occupied by Austro-Hungarian forces. From 12-06-1918 until 10-05-1920 the city was occupied by Anglo-French Expeditionary forces and then by White Army forces. From 1919 to 1925 Mariupolʹ was part of the Donet︠s︡ʹka hubernii︠a︡; from 1925 to 1930 it was part of the Mariupolʹsʹkyĭ okruh, and from 1932 to 1938 it was part of the Donet︠s︡ʹkyĭ okruh. From 1938 until 1961 it was part of the Stalinsʹka oblastʹ)
