Carlson was the first female appointed as full professor at Northwestern University, in 1928; at NU's Botany Department 1928-1958; first woman to major in botany at the university, undergraduate completed in 1916; completed a PhD in botany at the University of Wisconsin in 1925; with research companion Kate Staley, while at Northwestern, traveled to Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, Hawaii, and Europe to study flora; during their Central America expedition they collected nearly 5,000 plants and discovered 15 new species, trip sponsored by the Field Museum; Dr. Carlson is a founder of the [Illinois] Chapter of the Nature Conservancy and the National Conservancy; the Margery C. Carlson Nature Preserve (Illinois) was named in her honor in 1976)
