African American National Biography, accessed July 06, 2015, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Casey, Al; Albert Aloysius Casey; jazz musician, guitarist; born 15 September 1915 in Louisville, Kentucky, United States; studied guitar at Martin Smith Music School; relocated with his family to New York City (1930); a member of Fats Waller and His Rhythm (1934); played regularly with Waller, appearing in over 200 of the pianist's records (1934-1942); on electric guitar he had one of his best known solos with Waller in "Buck Jumpin' Sailors" (1941); won Esquire magazine's poll as top guitarist (1944) and (1945) and appeared in Esquire's all-star concert (1944); toured regularly as a member of tenor-saxophonist King Curtis's rhythm-and-blues band (1957-1961); led his first two albums: Buck Jumpin' (Original Jazz Classics 673) and the ballad-oriented Al Casey Quartet (Moodsville 12) (1960); came out of retirement to become a member of the Harlem Blues and Jazz band (1981-2000); performed with the Harlem All-Stars; died 11 September 2005 in New York, New York, United States)
