Mex.; district attorney of the third district 1866-1868; in 1869 was appointed attorney general of the Territory; upon the admission of New Mexico as a State into the Union was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate and served from March 27, 1912, to March 3, 1917; retired to Santa Fe, N. Mex., where he died on May 15, 1921)
