| Biography/History note | Silent-era cinematographer who went on to do special effects. Cinematographer for Laurel and Hardy's first film together, The lucky dog, in 1921. According to the article "The Kaiser and the cameraman: W.H. Durborough on the Eastern Front, 1915" by C. Graham, while Ries was in Germany filming for the 1915 film, On the firing line with the Germans, his passport was copied and given to a German agent. The false Ries was arrested, convicted and executed in England on October 27, 1915. Upon Ries's return from Germany, the U.S. Department of Justice opened an investigation, which was eventually dropped.
