African American Studies Center, accessed March 04, 2015, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Pereira, Francisca; political figure; born in 1942 in Bolama, Guinea-Bissau; joined the Partido Africano de Independencia de Guinea-Bissau e Cabo Verde (PAIGC) (1959); participated in international meetings, and was for a time based in Algeria, representing the PAIGC at the Pan African Women's Congress; simultaneously served as one of three women on the Supreme Council; became governor of the Bolama region in Guinea-Bissau (1970's), chairperson of the state committee of the city of Bissau, president of the União Democrática das Mulheres (UDEMU, Democratic Union of Women), and member of the Council of State by virtue of that position; minister of women's affairs (1990-1994); vice president of the national assembly (1994-1997); minister of the interior (1997-1999); minister of state, charged with political affairs and diplomacy (2002); worked on peace initiatives as a member of Femmes Africa Solidarité; part of a delegation to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (2001))
