Burroughs Institution in Washington, D.C. and studied voice under Sara Ritt; performed in Los Angeles, California (1921-1923); joined the pioneering African American musical revue Shuffle Along, New York City; she performed in Cuba (1924), at the Cotton Club in New York City (1925) and then in Los Angeles, accompanied by the bands of Paul Howard, Curtis Mosby, and Sonny Clay; sang with Clay's group in Australia (1928); starred as a solo singer at Frank Sebastian's Cotton Club in Los Angeles (1928); worked with Earl Hines's big band at the Grand Terrace in Chicago (1930-1931); joined Duke Ellington's orchestra (1931-1942); died 28 December 1949 in Los Angeles, California, United States)
