Meier, Matt S. Mexican American biographies, 1988: pages 204-205 (Rubén Salazar, born in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico. Moved to El Paso, Texas at age one with his family. Earned his B. A. from the University of Texas, El Paso in 1954, then became a reporter at several newspapers in El Paso, Santa Rosa, California, San Francisco and at the Los Angeles Times. Transferred to Mexico City where he became bureau chief, then returned to Los Angeles three years later in 1969. The Los Angeles Times decided to create a special column to explain Mexican American life and culture in Los Angeles, of which Ruben Salazar became the columnist. Hired as news director for the Spanish language television station KMEX. Was killed during his participation in a Mexican American protest march in East Los Angeles against the Vietnam war in late August 1970 by a police-fired high-velocity tear gas projectile.)
