In 1951, Dobbs gained fame when she won an international music competition in Geneva, Switzerland. The first African American woman to appear in a principal role at La Scala Opera House in Milan, Dobbs Janzon also desegregated the San Francisco Opera Company and performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. She taught at several institutions before retiring from Howard University in 1991.
