The town took its name from the first church which was called T︠S︡erkovʹ Boga Dukha Svi︠a︡togo. On the site of Bogodukhov was an earlier settlement named Diakovo Gorodishche [no publs. in LC data base] which was mentioned in sources of 1517. Because of frequent Tatar raids a fortress was built in Bogodukhov and the Akhtyrskiĭ kazachʹiĭ polk was stationed there. In 1780 Bogodukhov was an uyezd town in the Kharʹkovskoe namestnichestvo) Encyc. of Ukraine: v. 1, p. 257 (Bohodukhiv [Bohoduxiv]. A city and raion center in Kharkiv oblast, on the Merlia River. It was first mentioned in 1571 as Diakiv citadel, a defense post against Tatar raids. The Bohodukhiv fortress was built in 1662.
