NUCMC data from Westfield Athenaeum Archives for General William Shepard & Family materials, 1770-1964 (General William Shepard was born on Dec. 1, 1737 and died on Nov. 16, 1817. He fought in most of the wars that spanned his life, including the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War. He attended school until the age of seventeen, when he entered the army at the beginning of the French and Indian War. He rose through the ranks and stayed with the army until the conquest of Canada in 1763. He intended to stay in Westfield and become a farmer, but became involved in the army once again at the start of the American Revolution. It is here that he became a colonel and was a companion to George Washington in many battles. One of the most important of these was the Battle of Pell's Point, a small battle but a turning point in the war. His last act as colonel came when he defended the Springfield Arsenal in Springfield, Mass., during Shay's Rebellion. After the war he began a career in politics, first being elected as a state representative and eventually as a congressman. During his time in office he was asked to negotiate with the Indians of Penobscot and the Six Nations, also known as the Iroquois Confederacy. He also served as the deacon of his church for twenty-four years)
