Dictionary of African Biography, accessed via The Oxford African American Studies Center online database, July 27, 2014: (Lembede, Anton Muziwakhe; black nationalist, political figure, lawyer; born 21 January 1914 in Eston, Natal, South Africa; attended Adams College in Natal and qualified as a teacher in 1936; taught in Natal and the Orange Free State; enrolled in correspondence courses offered by the University of South Africa (UNISA), BA degree in philosophy and law (1940) and a bachelor of law degree in (1942); became a skilled linguist, besides his native Zulu learned at least six other languages, including Afrikaans, English, German, Latin, Sesotho, Xhosa; moved to Johannesburg to practice law at the law firm of Pixley ka Seme; was one of the cofounders of the African National Congress (ANC) (1944); earned a master's degree in philosophy from UNISA and became a partner in Seme's law firm in 1946; with future leaders such as Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, and Oliver Tambo launched the ANC Youth League in 1944 and was elected as the league's first president; died 1947 in South Africa)
