Rad. ent︠s︡ykl. istoriï Ukraïny: v. 2, p. 486 (Kostopilʹ, a city in Rovensʹka oblastʹ, and a center of the Kostopilʹʹsʹkyĭ raĭon. It arose at the end of the 18th cent. From 1885 it was the volost center of the Volynsʹka hubernii︠a︡. In the beginning of 1918 Soviet power was established in Kostopilʹ. In Feb. 1918 the city was occupied by Austro-German forces. In Nov. 1918 S. Petli︠u︡ra's forces occupied Kostopilʹ, but in June 1919 the city was liberated by the 1st Ukr. Division. In Sept. 1919 KostopilʹWas occupied by Polish forces. In July 1920 Soviet power was again reestablished but in Oct. 1920 the city was retaken by Polish forces and by the Polish-Russian Treaty of March 1921 KostopilʹWas granted to Poland. In 1939 as part of Western Ukraine the city was restored to Soviet Ukraine, where it became a rayon center in the Rovensʹka oblastʹ)
