In the 17th and 18th centuries it constituted parts of the Kharkiv and Izium Regiments. Later these lands became part of the Slobidska Ukraine gubernia [Slobidsʹka-Ukraïnsʹka hubernii︠a︡] (1765-80, 1796-1835), then part of the Kharkiv Vicegerency [Kharkivsʹke namisnyt︠s︡tvo] (1780-1796), then of Kharkiv gubernia [Kharʹkovskai︠a︡ gubernii︠a︡ ] (1835-1925). The Kharkiv gubernia consisted of 11 counties, one of which was the Kharkiv county [Kharkivsʹkyĭ povit]. Under Soviet rule the gubernia was abolished in 1925 and replaced by the Kharkiv, Izium, Kupianka, and Sumy okruhas.
