(Kup'i︠a︡nsʹk) p. 5 (before 1780 the settlement was called Sloboda Kupenka) p. 7 (Kupi︠a︡nsk, in former times called Kupi︠a︡nka, or Kupchinka or Kupensk, until 1780 was a small town first in the Kharʹkovskiĭ, and then in the Izi︠u︡mskiĭ polk. It was not only noted in the edict of 1708 when it was part of Slobodskai︠a︡ Ukraina, but was seen in the t︠s︡arskai︠a︡ gramota of 1685. When Kupi︠a︡nsk became an uyezd town in 1780 it was part of the Voronezhskoe namestnichestvo [Voronezʹke namisnyt︠s︡tvo], but in 1797 it was returned to the Slobodsko-Ukrainskai︠a︡ gubernii︠a︡ [Slobidsʹka-Ukraïnsʹka hubernii︠a︡]. As of now [1852] it is an uyezd town in the Kharʹkovskai︠a︡ gubernii︠a︡)

It was founded in 1655 as a sloboda and became a company town in the Kharkiv and Izium Regiments of Slobidska Ukraine (1685-1765). It became a county town in Voronezh vicegerency in 1780, in Slobidska Ukraine gubernia (1797), and in Kharkiv gubernia (1835). Kupianka is an important railway junction)
