(concelho de Proença-a-Nova) front flap (a very old place, possibly of Roman origin; known for a long time as Cortiçada; its history is closely linked to the military/religious orders of Hospital and Malta, and to the Priory of Crato; it received its first city charter in 1244, in which the name Proencia was used; in 1512 Dom Manuel gave it a new charter and called it Vila Melhorada, but made reference to its old name of Cortiçada; the name Vila Melhorada didn't last long and soon it was being called Proença-a-Nova) nota prévia (Proença-a-Nova is the name of the concelho, the freguesia, and the city; this indicates that the city is the seat of government for the concelho; the concelho consists of six freguesias [listed], and has about 140 towns, villages, and hamlets)
