The family soon moved to Kingston, the Jamaican capital. After graduating from the University of the West Indies in 1971, he taught physics at the College of Arts, Science and Technology in Kingston and then enrolled at the University of Toronto, where he received a master's degree in 1976 and a doctorate in 1985.
