American Venus: the extraordinary life of Audrey Munson, model and muse, 1999 (surrogate) (Audrey Munson) New York times, 19 Dec. 2022: in an obituary in the Overlooked series on page B6 (Audrey Munson; born Audrey Marie Munson on June 8, 1891 in Rochester, N.Y., died Feb. 20, 1996 at an upstate New York asylum, aged 104; called 'the American Venus,' she was a model immortalized by sculptors, her image visible in monuments across New York City; in 1917, when she was in her mid-20s, The [New York] Sun proclaimed Munson "Miss Manhattan" after she modeled for Carl Augustus Heber's "Spirit of Commerce," which decorated one of two pylons supporting the Manhattan Bridge's arched gateway at Canal Street; Munson was the first American leading lady to appear nude in a mainstream movie (titled "Inspiration"), but she was also a protofeminist, joining Helen Sargent Hitchcock's Art Workers' Club for Women in demanding equality in the workplace) |
