Saale, son of Jugo Boehlau and Luise (born Schwabe); studied classical philology and archaeology in Bonn Würzburg, doctorate in Rostock 1884; in Bonn 1885 passed exam for upper-level teaching of Greek, Latin and history; archaeological work in Greece 1885-1886 on a stipendium of the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut, follwed by 2 years teaching at the Moachimstaler Gymnasium, Berlin; 1891 called as director of the Königliches Museum Fridericianum in Kassel; instrumental in founding the Hessisches Lanesmuseum; 1924 first director of the combined Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Kassel; retirement 1928, to pursue his archaeological interests, moving to Göttingen 1931 for better library resources; limited by a malarial infection 1932; died Sept. 24, 1941 in Göttingen)
