Attended West Point 1874-1878 then taught military science and mathematics at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale 1886-1889, passed the bar exam during this time. Returned to serve in the army, where he became a captain, then eventually, the U. S. Army Chief of Staff on April 1906. Died in New York City on January 8, 1919.)
