African American National Biography, accessed February 21, 2015, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Mason, Biddy Bridget; philanthropist, entrepreneur, church founder, slave; born 15 August 1818 in Hancock, Mississippi, United States; bought first piece of property in Los Angeles, had two rental houses built on new property, and before long bought more land even farther south, near Sixth and Olive streets to put up additional rental buildings; became a wealthy woman by selling property bit by bit; worked as nurse and midwife free of charge; visited the small Los Angeles jail, taking food and counseling inmates; helped found the Los Angeles branch of the First African Methodist Episcopal Church (FAME) (1872); started a school and day-care center for children; took into own home the poor with nowhere else to go (1873); was memorialized at the site of original homestead with urban park and freestanding wall embedded with artifacts, portraying a remarkable life; died 15 January 1891 in Los Angeles, California, United States)
