He sold cookbooks in his Amsterdam Cookery Bookshop , but after seven years he got tired of it and decided to only write about food. His restaurant reviews and pieces about food first appeared in Elsevier and from 1991 in Het Parool and De Morgen. On November 17, 2005 he presented De Dikke Van Dam, a 735-page book about food based on his articles. He has placed his gastronomic library of sixty thousand titles in the Gastronomic Library Foundation (SGB), which he set up together with culinary historian Joop Witteveen and of which he was chairman until his death.
