Lavalle was raised in the Flushing and Rosedale neighborhoods of Queens, New York. He graduated with a degree in English from Cornell University and a Master of Fine Arts Program of Creative Writing at Columbia University. LaValle is an Associate Professor at the Columbia University School of the Arts. He lives in New York.))
