Woolworth Company and the operator of variety stores known as "Five-and-Dimes" (5- and 10-cent stores) or dimestores; born in Rodman, New York; died at Glen Cove, New York; opened a five-cent store in Utica, New York, on 22 February 1878 which failed within weeks; opened his second store in April 1879, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he expanded the concept to include merchandise priced at ten cents; he founded the British branch, F W Woolworth & Co, Ltd, in Liverpool, England on 5 November 1909)
