Mahamane Ousmane; ran unsuccessfully for president four times; as head of PNDS he was leading opposition figure during rule of Pres. Mamadou Tandja; after Tandja was deposed in a coup, he won the presidency in a runoff in 2011, returning Niger to civilian rule; won again in 2016)
