During the First World War Eschmann served in German Army; later he spent a year in Nazi prison; he had recieved his post-secondary education in the "Angelicum", the Dominician University in Rome. Although his official trainining was in theology, he always taught philosophy; he taught for twenty-two years as a Senior Fellow of the Pontifical Institute of Medieval Studies and as a Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Toronto. Beyond his academic affiliations, Eschmann was a priest in the Roman Catholic Order of Preachers, generally called "Dominicans")
