| Found in | Memoirs of Dame Margery Corbett Ashby, 1996: p.250 (born 19 Apr. 1882) p.254 (died 15 May 1981) Oxford Dictionary of national biography, viewed online December 12, 2018 (Ashby, Dame Margery Irene Corbett (1882-1981); feminist and internationalist; born 19 April 1882 in London; educated at Newnham College, Cambridge; in 1907 she became secretary of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies; on 22 December 1910 she married (Arthur) Brian Ashby (1882/3-1970), barrister, and was thereafter known as Mrs Corbett Ashby; they had one son, born in 1914; she became closely identified with the International Woman Suffrage Alliance, working for it as secretary, member of the board, and president from 1923 to 1946, and attending its congresses until 1976; president of the Women's Liberal Federation; she lectured from Liberal platforms, all over the world; after the war she worked in association with the United Nations; she was a poor-law guardian for a time, and she also held posts in the Association for Moral and Social Hygiene, the County Federation of Women's Institutes, the British Commonwealth League, and the Women's Freedom League; in later life she became increasingly involved in local affairs in Sussex; she contributed to suffrage and Liberal journals and was editor of International Women's News from 1952 to 1961; received an honorary LLD at Mount Holyoke College, USA, in 1937 in recognition of her international work, and was appointed DBE in 1967; died on 15 May 1981 at Wickens, Horsted Keynes, Sussex, where she had lived since 1936) |
