Studied in Ohio at a mission school, converted from Presbyterianism to Roman Catholicism in 1846, he studied to become a Jesuit in Missouri. Became a priest in 1855 where he traveled widely and spoke about being a Christian Indian. In 1861, became a missionary to miners in the San Francisco area.)
