African American National Biography, accessed January 22, 2015, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Franti, Michael; poet, funk musician / singer, social reformer; born 21 April 1966 in Oakland, California, United States; graduated from the University of San Francisco; began career as musician began in with a spoken-word group called the Beatnigs (1986); formed group known as the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, with debut album, Hipocrisy is the Greatest Luxury (DHOH) (1990); founded Spearhead, releasing albums, Home and Chocolate Supa Highway (1994, 1997); the group became known as Michael Franti and Spearhead (MF&S), creating own record label, Boo Boo Wax, and in partnership with Six Degrees Records, released Stay Human (2001); recordedalbums such as Songs from the Porch and Everyone Deserves Music (2003-2004); produced and directed documentary about Israel, Iraq, and the Gaza Striptitled, I Know I Am Not Alone (2005); great commercial success with reggae single Say Hey (I Love You), resulting in the MF&S' release of The Sound of Sunshine (2008, 2010))
