Stamford; such social contact improved his prospects and at 19 attended U. Helmstedt to study theology and philology, soon transferring to history; 1807 transferred to Göttingen, and after completion of his studies undertook further tutorial work until his call to the institute run by Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi where he excelled; participation in the Prussian Army in the Wars of Liberation; 1818 appointed to a professorship and assistant directorship of the gymnasium in Mainz and occupied this post until 1832, when he retired because of contentiousness with the school's director; his time in Mainz saw publication of his principal work "Lehrbuch der Geographie alter und neuer Zeit"; 1832 elected deputy for Kreis Osthofen to the Landtag; 1834 position in the Collegien of the Oberschul- and Oberstudienrat of Darmstadt, having effective control over the entire educational system of the grand duchy of Hesse, in which position he promoted development of technical education as well as primary and higher education; retirement for health reasons from state service in 1846, and lived further in the circles of family and friends, working on several projects including revised editions of the Lehrbuch", until his death Jul. 10, 1870) |
