Biography/History noteRobert Melville Danford (b. July 7, 1879, New Boston, Ill.-d. Sept. 12, 1974, Stamford, Conn.), U.S. Army General, graduated from Cornell College in Iowa, then from West Point in 1904. Later, he served as Commandant of West Point from 1919 to 1923. He was Chief of the Field Artillery from 1938 to 1942, and retired from active service on February 28, 1942. He founded and became the first editor of the annual register of West Point graduates. Shortly after his retirement in 1942, New York City Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia named him head of the New York City Patrol Corps.
