Oxford dictionary of national biography online, viewed 9 December 2016 (Sir Geoffrey Arthur Romaine Callender; naval historian and museum director; born 25 November 1875 at Didsbury, Manchester, the elder son of Arthur William Callender; educated in Oxford at St Edward's School and at Merton College; appointed in January 1905 to the new Royal Naval College, Osborne, becoming head of the history and English department in January 1913; moved in 1921 to the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, as head of the history department; appointed in 1922 chair of history at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich; in 1934, became the first director of the National Maritime Museum; knighted in 1938; died suddenly at the museum on 6 November 1946)
